Why this course?

Studying IB Literature provides students with a deep understanding of literary works from various cultures and time periods. It encourages critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to analyse texts in depth. Students will develop skills in writing, interpretation, and discussion, which are invaluable for both academic and personal growth.

Course Content

  • Part 1: Readers writers and texts
    This area of study includes the investigation of how texts themselves operate as well as the contexts and complexities of production and reception. Focus is on the development of personal and critical responses to the particulars of communication.
  • Part 2: Time and Space
    This area of study focuses on the contexts of language use and the variety of ways literary and non-literary texts might both reflect and shape society at large.
  • Part 3: Intertextuality: Connecting Texts
    This area of study focuses on intertextual relationships with possibilities to explore various topics, thematic concerns, generic conventions, modes or literary traditions that have been introduced throughout the course.

External Assessment (80%): Paper 1 – Guided Textual Analysis
Analysis of non-literary passages

External Assessment (80%): Paper 2 – Essay
Comparative essay on works studied
25% of grade

External Assessment (80%): HL Essay
Essay on one non-literary body of work or a literary work
20% of grade

Internal Assessment: Individual Oral Presentation
Examine the ways in which the global issue of your choice is presented through the content and form of one of the works and one of the bodies of work that you have studied. One non-literary body of work and one literary work.
20% of grade
